Review of Food Residues
Raw
Products Committee
APA
annually convenes the apple processing industry¹s
Raw Products Committee in Washington, D.C. Participants
are executives of apple and food processing companies,
who procure apples for quality food products.
Agenda
includes updates on latest federal regulations on
pesticides, food safety, and labor, as well as briefings
on apple supply and handling, legislation, and reporting
requirements. The APA Raw Products Committee designs
the form used to report pesticide use on apples used
for food processing.
Food
Policy
APA
monitors and has regular input on food policies affecting
the apple processing industry. Nancy Chapman, MPH,
RD, is APA¹s vice-president for food and nutrition
policy. Ms. Chapman works with FDA, EPA, and USDA
to assure that apple processors have a voice in major
federal policymaking and
regulating. APA issues periodic food policy statements
and position papers.
Applesauce
Residue Study
The purpose of this study was to determine
the residues of selected organophosphate and n-methyl
carbamate pesticides, and their major metabolites,
in commercially prepared applesauce collected from
applesauce producers during their routine production.
The National Food Laboratory, Inc. was contracted
to provide residue analyses for both the organophosphate
and n-methyl carbamate pesticides on the applesauce.
Many
fresh fruits and vegetables are currently tested and
monitored by the United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA) through the Pesticide Data Program (PDP). Not
all processed products are routinely tested, and the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sometimes uses
data collected from fresh commodities in preparing
risk assessments for processed items such as applesauce.
These same data are also used to evaluate the safety
and re-registration of crop protection chemicals.
